Marvin Tate

Marvin Tate (he/him/they/them) is a Chicago-based interdisciplinary artist, poet, musician, educator, and community arts activist whose work dissolves the boundaries between spoken word, music, visual art, theater, and social practice. For over three decades, Tate has cultivated a singular artistic voice rooted in storytelling, improvisation, spirituality, humor, and an unwavering commitment to community. Drawing from his experiences growing up in Chicago's North Lawndale neighborhood, his work transforms personal memory into collective reflection, exploring themes of race, identity, love, mortality, resilience, and social justice with equal measures of tenderness and urgency. 

Initially recognized as one of Chicago's most compelling performance poets, Tate emerged from the city's vibrant spoken-word movement during the late 1980s and early 1990s, earning the title of Chicago Poetry Slam Champion in 1990. His fearless blend of poetry with funk, jazz, soul, blues, experimental music, and theatrical performance established him as a pioneering voice whose influence extends across multiple artistic disciplines. As the founder and frontman of Marvin Tate's D-Settlement, he has developed an innovative performance practice that fuseslyrical storytelling with improvisational music, creating emotionally charged works that challenge conventional artistic categories. 

Throughout his career, Tate has collaborated with an extraordinary range of musicians, composers, visual artists, and performers, including Angel Olsen, Ben LaMar Gay, Mike Reed, Leroy Bach, Tim Kinsella, Theaster Gates, the Black Monks of Mississippi, Joseph Clayton Mills, and Johanna Brock. These collaborations reflect his belief that artistic creation flourishes through dialogue, experimentation, and shared inquiry. Whether performing at jazz festivals, avant-garde music venues, galleries, theaters, or community spaces, Tate approaches every project as an opportunity to build meaningful connections between artists and audiences.  

Equally accomplished as a visual artist, Tate creates assemblages and sculptural works from found and discarded materials, transforming everyday objects into powerful narratives of memory, survival, and renewal. His self-taught practice embraces the beauty of overlooked materials while honoring the histories embedded within them. His visual work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout Chicago and beyond, reflecting the same poetic sensibility that animates his performances and writing.

An award-winning educator, he has developed workshops and residencies that encourage participants of all ages to discover their own creative voices through poetry, songwriting, storytelling, improvisation, and recycled artmaking. His work with schools, correctional facilities, neighborhood organizations, and cultural institutions demonstrates his enduring commitment to using art as a catalyst for empowerment, dialogue, and long-term social change.
