Each year, 3Arts invites a previous awardee to create an artwork that captures the spirit of our annual 3Arts Awards Celebration. We're honored to feature Made of Us by 2022 Next Level Awardee Reveca Torres as the artwork at the heart of this years event. Through painting, illustration, photography, film, movement, and other media Reveca's practice is a form of expression and a tool for advocacy and social justice. "Made of Us is about the different people, stories, identities, and artists that make up Chicago. It is a group of people together, all different but connected–like a puzzle. They represent the many communities that make this city what it is—people of color, immigrants, artists, disabled people, and so many others.
The faces are made up of different shapes and lines—how we are all made up of many different parts of ourselves—our identities, our cultures, our histories, our experiences, the places we've come from, and the people who have shaped us. Those parts together make us whole.
The lower half of the work resemble dancers, roots, or seeds–moving, with energy, ready to emerge. They're grounded, but they're also moving, growing, reaching, and becoming something. It's about the creative energy of Chicago–being grounded in where we come from and coming together to create and become part of something meaningful." - Reveca Torres
